MelbPC-ASN ("The ASN") Large Mailbox - Mail Fetcher

4. Mail Fetcher Set Up

There are a number of ways to use your seven gigabytpe melbpc.asn.au mailbox. One that uses your current mail program as you do now is to:

  • Fetch all your email from other mailboxes to the melbpc.asn.au mailbox
  • Use your current email program to download all email from the melbpc.asn.au mailbox to your computer
  • Read all your email on your computer as you do now

Note:  To download your email as described in Section 5, your email client must support SSL downloads on Port 995. Some older or freeware versions of commercial email programs do not. Please read Section 5D and check your email program for SSL support prior to commencing the changes in Sections 4 and 5. All Microsoft email client programs and Thunderbird are known to support SSL downloads.

A.  The steps below describe how to set up the mail fetcher for the melbpc.asn.au mailbox. Before you do this, it is suggested that you download all email from your current mailbox to your computer by running your email program. Email yourself a test email to your username@melbpc.org.au.au mailbox and close down the email program (so it does not download the test email). This will provide a simple starting point to test your mail fetcher set-up.

Sign in to your melbpc.asn.au mailbox. In the top menu click on "Settings" and then "Accounts" as shown below.

B.  In the section "Get mail from other accounts:", click on add another mail account. Then enter your melbpc.org.au email address and click on "Next Step".

C.  Enter the details as shown below to collect email from your melbpc.org.au mailbox using SSL secure sockets layer. Note that the box "Always use a secure connection" is ticked and the port is 995. You can leave this box unticked and use port 110, but it means secure sockets layer is not used for mail collection. After you enter the information, click on "Add Account".

D.  The next box will tell you if the details you have entered are correct with advice that the mail account has been added. For these instructions it is suggested you click on "No" and add the mail account name for sending mail from the melbpc.asn.au web mail later. If you receive an error message, check that you have entered your own username and password correctly and the details for the pop server and port are as above. From the message below click on "Finish".

E.  You will be returned to the "Accounts" details box. In the "Get mail from other accounts section", the information will be similar to that below with information on the number of emails that has been fetched.

F.  Click on "View History" in the "Get mail from other accounts section". The information will be similar to that below after six minutes if you have sent test emails to your username@melbpc.org.au mailbox so the mail fetcher has email to fetch.

G.  Congratulations your mail fetcher is working correctly to fetch your melbpc.org.au email. To download all your email to your computer proceed as detailed in Download Email. If you wish, you can read your email using the web mail interface (click on "Inbox" in the left panel).
