A mailbox for "yourusername" with an email address of mailname@melbpc.asn.au will be created ("The ASN mailbox"), where "yourusername" and mailname are the same. For the trial, one additional email address will be available for delivery to the same "yourusername" ASN mailbox. For management purposes, the mailname of this additional address must indicate your Firstname and contain your Lastname. For example, if your name is Valerie Roberts, an additional email address of either Valerie.Roberts@melbpc.asn.au (with a dot between the Valerie and Roberts), ValerieRoberts@melbpc.asn.au, VRoberts@melbpc.asn.au, Val.Roberts@melbpc.asn.au or other combination with "Roberts" is possible. This is subject to first come first served as email addresses must be unique and not confusing (the same mailname with and without a dot will not be allocated). The only non alphabet character allowed in the mailname is a dot. Email addresses are not case sensitive, so you can use any combination of upper and lower case letters you wish. The additional email address will be allocated by email request to (melbpcasn at melbpc dot asn dot au) after you have logged into your ASN mailbox. These additional mailnames will not be available for your melbpc.org.au address.
It is not necessary to use the yourusername@melbpc.asn.au email address. Your can use the ASN seven gigabyte mailbox to fetch your melbpc.org.au email as described in these Help Pages under Mail Fetcher.
Both melbpc.org.au and melbpc.asn.au email addressess are only avialable to financial members of the User Group. All required email should be removed from both mailboxes if you intend leaving the User Group.
Downloading your email from your ASN mailbox to your computer with POP is illustrated in these Help Pages sections 4 and 5. POP is the protocol you most likely have used with your melbpc.org.au mailbox.
IMAP is an email protocol in which the ASN mailbox folders are synchronised with mailbox folders on your computer(s). Setting it up for the ASN mailbox is only a little different to that from setting up POP. It use may be discussed in the melbpc.computing.misc newsgroup.
Your ASN mailbox will be created with the same password as yourusername@melbpc.org.au password. Independently of your melbpc.org.au password, it is possible to change the password for your ASN mailbox from the webmail interface of the ASN mailbox. Changing your melbpc.org.au password does not change your password for the ASN mailbox (or vice versa), as these are independent passwords. Your password management may be simpler if you maintain the two passwords to be the same, but this is not a system requirement.
Until management scripts are fully developed for the ASN mailboxes, resetting your ASN mailbox password may may require up to 48 hours duration or more. Great care should be taken in managing your ASN mailbox password. For your ASN password to be reset, the first step is to ensure you know your melbpc.org.au password by logging into the MelbPC User Manager. Then email (admin at melbpc dot org dot au) advising that you wish your ASN mailbox password reset. It will be reset to be the same as your current User Manager login password. You will be advised by email to yourusername@melbpc.org.au mailbox when it has been reset, with a cc copy to the office. Please do not contact the office staff to reset the password as they do not currently have the capability. After 48 hours from your request, if you cannot read your melbpc.org.au mailbox, the office can advise if the cc reset notice for your username has been received. If you forget both your ASN password and your melbpc.org.au password, first please contact the office to reset your melbpc.org.au password and then email to have your ASN password reset.
