MelbPC-ASN ("The ASN") Large Mailbox - Download Email |
|
5. Download Email Note: To download your email as described in Section 5, your email client must support SSL downloads on Port 995. Some older or freeware versions of commercial email programs do not. Please read Section 5D below and check your email program for SSL support prior to commencing the changes in Sections 4 and 5. All Microsoft email client programs and Thunderbird are known to support SSL downloads. A. Once your mail fetcher is fetching email as may be seen from fetcher history in the Mail Fetcher Section G, enable your melbpc.asn.au account to download email with your email program. After you sign-in, click on "Settings", "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" and then "Enable pop for all email" as shown below in the "Pop Download" section. Then click on "Save Changes"."
B. Return to the Settings / Accounts "Forwarding and Pop/Imap" menu. In the "Pop Download Section", it is recommended under 2., that you select "Delete Melbourne PC User Group Mail's copy" as shown below, as this will delete mail from your melbpc.asn.au mail box after it is downloaded to your email client. However, with a seven gigabyte mail box you can select the other options to leave mail in your melbpc.asn.au mail box if you wish. Click on "Save Changes".
C. The next step is change the pop server in your email program from that for popa.melbpc.org.au to that required for your melbpc.asn.au mailbox (pop.googlemail.com). You will also need to change your username from just "yourusername" (with no "@melbpc.org.au") to the complete "yourusername@melbpc.asn.au" (to include "@melbpc.asn.au"). This is shown below for a windows email program configuration, but the information is similar for all email programs. Your current smtp server name can remain unchanged. (that shown in the example below is for MelbPC dial-up). Please note that you must use a SSL connect to the pop server, so for Windows email programs there is one more step as outlined in the section below.
D. Using a SSL (secure sockets layer) connection is required to download email from your melbpc.asn.au mail box. Selecting this does depend on your email program, with the example being shown for MS email programs. In the "Tools / Accounts / Properties " section (where you enter the pop server name under "Servers") click on "Advanced". For "Incoming Mail (POP3) click on "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". Ensure the port is shown as 995 as below. Click on "OK" at the bottom of the Window. Note that an SSL connection is not required for the outgoing smtp server. Also note that "Log on Using Secure Password Authentication" in the "Servers" window above is not required. Examples are given for other email programs in the many help sections of your melbpc.asn.au mailbox web mail. In all cases, the username is the complete yourusername@melbpc.asn.au.
E. Your configuration is now complete to download email from your melbpc.asn.au mailbox. Note that email for both yourusername@melbpc.org.au and yourusername@melbpc.asn.au will be downloaded from this mailbox when the mail fetcher is set up as in these help files. It does not matter which email address is used. F. If your email download does not work, check you have entered the complete "yourusername@melbpc.asn.au" as the username, check you have entered your password correctly, check the details are as above and you are using SSL. If if still does not work, you can return to the original settings for your email. For MelbPC, this is popa.melbpc.org.au for the pop server, just "yourusername" for the username (no @melbpc.org.au). You can also use SSL with popa.melbpc.org.au if you wish or untick the SSL box. Return to the Mail Fetcher set-up and in the "Accounts" section within "Get mail from other account" delete the entry for yourusername@melbpc.org.au. This will stop the mail fetcher.
